Mr Matthew Brown

Headmaster

Matthew Brown was educated in the UK. He attended university in Wales, having become fluent in Welsh, and went on to teach the subject that has become his lifelong passion – Physics. Matthew has extensive experience of academic and pastoral leadership having been Head of Department and Head of a large and very successful Sixth Form before eventually becoming Headteacher. Prior to leaving Wales to move to Malaysia Matthew was Head of Learning Services for the entire region. He led the establishment of the first all through school (ages 3-18) and managed over 40 Primary and Secondary schools. Matthew missed interacting with students thus he opted to return to a school based position. As Headmaster of Epsom College in Malaysia, Matthew is committed to ensuring consistently excellent standards both in terms of academic outcomes, pastoral care and wider curriculum provision.

Ms Buddhini Tan

Bursar

Buddhini holds a Bachelor of Accountancy and boasts over 20 years’ experience as a Chartered Accountant within finance and operations, education as well as hospitality, leisure, property investment, trading & manufacturing industries. She worked at PricewaterhouseCoopers for 10 years covering the SEA region.

Buddhini’s journey in education management began when she served as the Group Financial Controller in a private higher education institution owned by a US Education Group.  Subsequently she joined as a pioneer team member in an edutech start-up as a CFO to which she contributed in terms of its organisational development, strategic partnership, finance and human capital.  

Buddhini is a member of The Malaysian Institute of Accountants as well as The Malaysia Institute of Certified Public Accountants. She is also an accredited professional of Organisational Development. Buddhini is an avid believer that holistic education improves lives and her career fulfilment is built on supporting students and teachers to enable the school community to thrive. 

Buddhini is a Certified Mindfulness Teacher.  She advocates mindfulness as a way of life, and helps people get to know themselves better, so they too can experience deeper connection, calm and joy in their lives.

Mrs Kate Carden-Brown

Director of Admissions and Head of Higher Education

Kate has over 25 years experience of supporting students with making applications to university. Prior to moving to Malaysia to join Epsom, Kate led a large and successful Sixth Form with over 350 students that grew to be the leading state school for Oxbridge success in Wales. She is a strong advocate of building students’ confidence and ability to engage with challenges beyond the classroom and has worked hard to establish a vibrant super curricular programme. Under her leadership her previous school debate team were crowned Welsh Schools Debating Champions and made it to the British finals. At Epsom she has continued this work for example by encouraging and supporting students in setting up and leading debate teams and academic societies that enable them to broaden their knowledge while developing their interpersonal skills.

Mrs Wendy Jones

Deputy Headteacher – Academic

Prior to joining Epsom Wendy Jones worked for many years leading the Sixth Form at KTJ. Wendy works closely with our Headmaster, Mr Brown, to continue to build on the academic success of our school and continue to improve standards of teaching and learning across all departments. Wendy is recognised as an excellent teacher and enjoys very positive working relationships with staff and her students. She has a proven track record of successful academic leadership and of contributing to strategic direction.

Mr Ian Pye

Head of Boarding

With over 25 years’ service in the Royal Navy, many of which he spent instructing in Naval establishments, Mr Ian Pye brings extensive leadership and management experience to the position of Head of Boarding. Due to his skills and attributes he is also our Facilities coordinator, Senior Steward in Propert and coordinates our CCA programme.

Mr Pye joined Epsom College when it opened its doors in 2014 as part of our Boarding Team based in Propert House. Ian holds a CELTA and a football coaching qualification. He has many hobbies and interests. He is very practical, indeed he built his own house and enjoys sharing his DIY skills with the students. In addition he enjoys cricket, travel, snorkelling (this is a particular passion), reading, psychology and architecture.

Mr James Armstrong

Acting Head of Prep School 

James plays a key role in preparing our students for the transition to our senior school in his role as Year 6 teacher. Prior to joining Epsom, James worked as Head of English at Dedworth School in Berkshire. James is an excellent role model for our students and builds very strong pupil teacher relationships. As Head of Carr House he sets high expectations of the boys in his house not just in terms of academics but also in terms of their personal development and conduct. James’s good humour, positive attitude and approachable nature make him very popular amongst our pupils. He is a keen sportsman and is often to be seen on the badminton court. He is a keen football fan.

Dr Simon Cooke

Assistant Headteacher

Prior to joining Epsom Dr Simon Cooke worked at KYUEM where he successfully led the History department and was Head of the Humanities Faculty. He has a proven track record as an outstanding teacher whose pupils have enjoyed consistent Oxbridge success. He contributes greatly to the holistic development of students through enrichment activities such as MUN and academic societies. At Epsom Simon continues to inspire students through his excellent teaching but is also a member of our leadership team where he contributes to the strategic direction of Epsom and its quality assurance procedures.

Mr Phil Pedro

Head of Business & Economics, EPQ, Assistant Headteacher (Senior School)

Mr Pedro oversees the academic progress of students at Epsom from Key Stage 4 to Key Stage 5. He monitors their progress and works closely with Mrs Wendy Jones, our Deputy Head, to ensure that any issues are addressed promptly and that these interventions are effective. Mr Pedro is also responsible for the EPQ and leads the work of the Business and Economics Departments. Mr Pedro has extensive experience as an educator having taught MFL and Business in Austria, Japan and in the UK where he obtained his PGCE. During his two Bachelor degrees in French and Spanish universities, Phil specialised in Literature and Linguistics, and Business Management and Accounting. His Master’s degrees in Literature, Languages and Business are from universities in France and Germany. Phil is a keen sportsman and an avid cyclist.

Mrs Jenny Garnett

Carr Housemistress

Jenny is a very experienced and successful educator who has worked in boarding schools before joining us at Epsom. Her philosophy resonates very closely with Epsom’s – she recognises all her students as individuals and values and celebrates this individuality in her lessons. Jenny considers her subjects of English and Dramatic Arts to be a wonderful combination because they allow her to be very creative with her teaching and to use Drama skills to teach the English language. She believes that this enables her students to have fun and learn at the same time. Jenny has an infectious enthusiasm for her subjects and her energy and positivity shine through!

Mr Dien Wooler

Carr Assistant Housemaster

Dien works in the PE Department and teaches PE and Swimming across the whole school. He joined Epsom in 2021 after spending 6 years in South Korea as a Head of Department. Dien previously taught in state schools in the UK and prior to this, had a long career as an officer in the British military. His education includes an MA from the University of Exeter.

Dien is passionate about the benefits of PE and Sports and feels strongly that there is an activity out there for everyone to shine. He loves all sports but in particular he enjoys Athletics. He competed at a high level for 15 years as a jumper and loves to impart his knowledge and experiences onto his students. Dien is a qualified swim and gymnastics coach and takes great delight in seeing students make progress no matter how small.

Dien has a wealth of experience in training, and leading sports teams in overseas sporting competitions such as the FOBISIA Games and World School Games and is looking forward to taking Epsom teams to similar events in Malaysia and further afield.

Mr Dean Jones

Granville Housemaster

Mr Dean Jones is the Housemaster for Granville House and teaches English as an Additional Language to pupils in Epsom College in Malaysia.

Dean has enjoyed a rich and varied career and has worked in countries globally – notably China and Japan. One of his more prominent roles was deputy managing director for a large German multinational company with a chain of English language teaching schools.

In addition to an honours degree in Applied Physics, Mr Jones has an iPGCE from the University of Nottingham and a master’s degree in education management from the University of Surrey. Formerly an IELTS examiner, Dean was a member of the Chartered Management Institute and chaired English UK South West, a subsidiary of the organisation that is responsible for the accreditation of English as an Additional Language teaching in the United Kingdom.

Mr Jones speaks basic Chinese and enjoys golf and playing the piano.

Mr Mohammed Aden

Mohammed Aden joined Epsom in 2014 from Plashet School in London where he was the Deputy Head of Science for 5 years. Mohammed leads our Biology Department and students admire his extensive subject knowledge and love of his subject. Mohammed believes that every child should get an outstanding education that helps them unlock and realise their potential so they become responsible and successful global citizens. Mohammed enjoys reading, travelling, learning about new cultures and running extracurricular clubs and activities where he is able to share his knowledge with students beyond the curriculum.

Mr Ian Schoeman

Propert Housemaster

Mr Schoeman takes a very innovative and forward thinking approach to learning. For example, our performing Arts Department has continued to thrive despite online learning thanks to initiatives such as the Epsom Eisteddfod and Epsom Edge online. Ian is extremely professional and leads his faculty by example. As Head of Propert House he sets the highest standards both academically and pastorally. Ian joined Epsom from Taylor’s International School in Puchong, where he was Head of Performing Arts. Ian has overseen a number of recent school productions, including Footloose, Hairspray and Peter Pan. Ian was previously a Head of Department in South Africa and, as a teacher, also experienced an exchange year at the prestigious King’s College in Taunton (UK).

Mr Rupert Whitty

Propert Assistant Housemaster

Mr Rupert Whitty joined Epsom in 2017 from Dubai, where he taught EAL at an international school for three years. Prior to that he spent two years working at a university language centre in the UK, and six years at an international school in Bangkok. He believes that the best EAL support can only be achieved by knowing a child’s interests and their previous cultural and educational background. Epsom’s EAL Department has enjoyed significant success under Rupert’s leadership with EAL students progressing to achieve offers from some of the most prestigious universities globally. As Assistant Housemaster of Propert Rupert works closely with the boys in his House to ensure their personal development and highest standards of care.

Mrs Denu Sankey

Denu’s work permeates many areas of our school community. As a Chemistry specialist Denu is integral to the success of our science department. She has a particular interest in supporting students with additional needs and leads our Learning Support Centre where she enables students to overcome challenges relating to their learning by taking a very individualised approach. Every child will have a bespoke programme to suit their individual needs. As Head of Crawfurd House, Denu supports her girls both academically and pastorally ensuring the highest standards of care. Prior to joining Epsom, Denu taught in the UK (Coopers’ Company & Coborn School) and at Garden International School (KL) and is heavily involved in charity fundraising events such as the RNLI and Oxfam.

Mrs Masako Takamiya

Mrs Takamiya is our Assistant Housemistress of Rosebery House where she builds very strong and positive relationships with her students. She is also integral to the strong links that we are able to build with our Japanese families in her role as Japanse Liaison Officer. Masako believes strongly in education and the importance of a holistic approach. She is an excellent role model and ambassador for our school in all that she does. Masako is a qualified Yoga instructor and the sessions that she runs are equally popular among our staff and pupils.

Ms Kate Orpwood

Rosebery Housemistress

Kate’s teaching philosophy is that of Goethe: ‘if we treat people as they could be, we will help them become what they ought to be’. This is how we nurture ‘individuals who are unafraid to forge their own paths’. This resonates with Epsom’s belief that ‘education is the greatest tool we have to change the world’. Kate believes that academic mastery matters, and it must start with us as teachers. Kate has a First Class BA (Hons) in English and American Literature and Master’s Distinction in Commonwealth and Postcolonial Literatures; her portfolio for her PGCE course graded all twenty of her observed lessons as 1s with ‘outstanding’ subject knowledge. Kate’s students have, unsurprisingly, enjoyed Oxbridge and Ivy League success and her passion and enthusiasm for learning shine through. In addition to her academic work, Kate has worked for many years as an Assistant Housemistress and ensures the highest standards of care for her girls.

Mr Jordan Brown

Year 5 Teacher

Jordan Brown possesses a bachelor’s degree in Natural Sciences from the University of Cambridge. During his undergraduate study, he specialised in the Biological Sciences with a specific focus on Biochemistry. He qualified as a teacher through the Institute of Education, achieving distinctions on his research projects and dissertations written in the field of Primary Education. Prior to his arrival at Epsom he taught at NLCS Jeju and at Grange Primary School in London, where he helped invigorate the school’s extracurricular opportunities and develop their Science curriculum. He has a particular affinity for Epsom’s dedication to teaching ‘the whole child’ and hopes to share in the school’s passion for academic rigour, rich extracurricular opportunities and excellent pastoral care.

Mrs Karen Selva

Year 3 Teacher

Mrs Karen Selva joined Epsom as a Prep School class teacher from Cairo English school in Egypt. She has experience in teaching the IB in schools in Qatar and Malaysia, and is in the process of completing her Masters degree. Karen is an active sportswoman, with a keen interest in badminton, bowling, climbing and hiking. Karen is a keen advocate of protecting the planet and educating her students for a more sustainable future.

Mrs Ubanisha Balasubramaniam

Year 1 Teacher

Mrs Ubanisha Balasubramaniam (Nisha) joined Epsom from Fairview International School in Kuala Lumpur. She has experience in teaching Nursery (EYFS) through to Year 4 and has specialised in teaching the Malay Language and Physical Education. Nisha strongly believes that every child should learn according to their own interest and pace. She believes that learning through play is the best way to allow children to explore and develop themselves to meet their learning goals. Nisha values creativity within her teaching and often takes her students into an outdoor environment to be inspired and stimulated by nature.

Mrs Peng Yuanzhen

English Mandarin Immersion Programme Teacher

Mrs Peng is a native Mandarin speaker from Mainland China, who joined Epsom having taught previously in Rafflesia International School. Mrs Peng is extremely talented and well qualified and holds a Master’s degree in teaching Chinese as a foreign language from Sun Yat-sen University Guangzhou, China. She enjoys sharing Chinese culture, Zentangle, yoga and reading traditional Chinese medicine books. Mrs Peng leads our highly successful Mandarin Department as well as the Mandarin side of the English Mandarin Immersion Programme in the Prep School.

Mr Rui Jie Tee

English Mandarin Immersion Programme Teacher

Rui Jie has over 3 years of experience teaching English and Dramatic Arts and worked previously as Head of Department – a role that included overseeing a range of inter house activities both sporting and cultural. Rui Jie is a lifelong learner and is completing a PhD. He relishes the challenge of meeting learners at their ability level and finding the most suitable learning style for them. He considers his English and Drama experience a wonderful combination that allows him to deliver highly creative learning activities. Fully fluent in English & Mandarin, Rui Jie is integral to our English Mandarin Immersion Programme.

Mr Simon Hose

Head of Mathematics

Mr. Simon Hose leads our highly successful Mathematics Department which has seen students achieve prestigious awards such as top of the world in IGCSE. Simon is experienced in delivering Mathematics to IGCSE and A-level and Further Mathematics to A-level having spent 9 years teaching at a school in Qatar. He has also taught Mathematics to adults through night and weekend courses. Simon is a Sixth Form tutor and takes a keen interest in current affairs.

Mr Ali Arafath

Mathematics Teacher

Mr Arafath has always loved Maths and he began his teaching journey a lot earlier than many, by helping his peers in Maths in Year 8 and 9, before making his way up to a Teaching Assistant in his second year at University (despite studying to be an Aerospace Engineer). Mr Arafath never intended to be a teacher, but soon realised that he was born to be one. His love for teaching, “a noble profession”, continued to grow when he could see his students growing and learning together. Prior to joining Epsom, Mr Arafath worked as Head of Department for both Maths and ICT. Students in his care participated in international competitions where they won many awards, and received top IGCSE results. Mr Arafath is a keen sportsman and enjoys participating in many of the sports that Epsom has to offer.

Ms Shanthi Pillay

Mr Leo Baloyo

Mathematics Teacher

Having graduated from King’s College London with First Class Honours, Leo Baloyo was determined to follow in the footsteps of his father and take up a career in teaching and make a difference to young people’s lives. Leo teaches A-level Mathematics and Further Mathematics and enjoys taking his teaching beyond the classroom via Mathematics clubs and enrichment activities that contribute to preparing students for the STEP paper that is required by some of the more elite universities. Leo believes in the power of education and his father, an inspirational and successful teacher is his role model.

Mr Jamie Bevan

Mathematics Teacher

Jamie holds a bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Sheffield, as well as a master’s degree in Energy and Environmental Engineering. He completed his PGCE in Mathematics at the Institute of Education, University College London.

Jamie strives to relate Maths to the real-world as much as possible. He is currently in the process of completing a course developed by the UN Climate Change Learning Partnership that enables teachers to embed climate change more securely into their teaching. He loves researching the history of mathematics and asking intriguing questions to start lessons. Outside of Maths Jamie is currently our Duke of Edinburgh Coordinator. He loves cycling, playing the piano, skiing and has a keen interest in all things cryptocurrency. He never stops going on about that time he cycled up the Rhine…

Dr Muniswaran A/L Sivanathan

Sciences (A-Level Biology) Teacher

Dr Munis joined Epsom from the Research Development Unit at the University of Malaya, having previously taught Science at Sri KDU and KDU College. Dr Munis is passionate about his subject and has published a number of scientific articles, in addition to authoring reference books for science students. Dr Munis remains a member of various scientific organisations (such as the Malaysian Scientific Association) and enjoys passing on his knowledge of Taekwondo to students, in which he is a Black Belt 2nd Dan and certified instructor. Dr Munis is a very popular and well respected tutor and the boys in his care speak very highly of him. He is one of the team of staff who deliver our Fast Track Programme.

Ms Aishah Wilson

Biology Teacher

Aishah is a valued member of our Science team, eager to share her enthusiasm for Biology with the students. Having graduated from the University of Oxford with a first class in her dissertation and achieved exceptional results in the IB Diploma, Aishah also provides support, guidance and super-curricular and enrichment activities to those targeting elite universities as Resident Elite University Tutor. Having volunteered with charities providing educational and engagement services to children with special needs, she proceeded to pursue a career in education, first starting out as an assistant at Marlborough College Malaysia where she supported students with learning difficulties in Biology and other sciences alongside taking on duties in pastoral care. Having joined the Epsom team, she is determined to ensure her classes are fun, inclusive and of top educational quality to bring out the best in her students.

CHEMISTRY.

Mr Spencer Cheng

Head of Chemistry

Spencer leads our Chemistry Department at Epsom. He is considered very knowledgeable and students at A-level value this greatly. He was educated in London and read Chemistry at the University of Manchester. After a long and successful career in the electronics industry, he decided to pursue his long held teaching dreams and trained to be a teacher in 2002. Spencer is a keen traveller and has been to nearly 100 countries. He is thus internationally aware, with an interest in political and environmental issues. He enjoys racquet sports and swimming and is learning to speak both Mandarin and Malay.

Mr Subash A/L Loganathan

A-Level Chemistry

Mr Subash Loganathan is an enthusiastic, positive and approachable member of our staff. He values education and loves to learn – he is an excellent role model in this way. He joined Epsom from INSPIROS International School, where he was the Head of Science Department and supported the work of the Mathematics department. He previously taught at INTI International College (Subang), and has 10 years’ experience of teaching Chemistry Cambridge A-levels, IB Diploma, Pre-University courses and also IGCSE Chemistry. Further to his teaching responsibilities, Subash has acquired great experience in the orchestration of Science Departments and in the formalisation of data setting & assessments. He brings this range of skills to the Science portfolio at Epsom.

PHYSICS.

Mrs Claudia Pinna

Head of Physics

Claudia has worked within education for more than 25 years. During this time, she has taught Physics and General Science in British International Schools. Claudia has experience of delivering IGCSE, A-level, the MYP and the IB diploma. Claudia has occupied many roles including Junior Editor for Science books, Head of House, Y7 and Y8 Science Coordinator, Advisor for Adult distance learning programs for the Ministry of Education in Peru, Round Square Coordinator and she is currently our Head of Physics. Claudia holds a Licenciature of Education degree speciailising in Physics and Mathematics from the Universidad Femenina del Sagrado Corazón, Peru. She also has a Masters in Cognitive Development. Claudia believes in delivering a holistic education and in getting to know her students as individuals.

Mr Ryan Murphy

Physics Teacher

Mr Ryan Murphy has thirteen years of successful experience in teaching subjects such as Physics, Mathematics and General Science at International Schools in the Middle East and Asia. He specialises in teaching Key Stage 3 to Key Stage 5 Physics as this is where his professional interest lies. Ryan graduated from Rhodes University in South Africa in 2005 with a B.SC Honors Degree in Physics and Electronics. He is a passionate teacher and finds it incredibly motivating to see learning taking place, and the joy it brings to his students. He is a firm believer in the power of positive thinking inside and out of the classroom, and that teachers should set high expectations and moral standards for their students and that students need to be diligent in their studies. Ryan also believes in having an open mind and positive attitude. He wants students to think of the classroom as a small community where each individual is encouraged to ask questions and to feel free in sharing ideas and experiences.

Dr James Phillips

Head of English

Dr James Phillips is a highly experienced educator having worked previously as Head of English and International Baccalaureate (IB) Extended Essay Coordinator. As well as the IB, James has taught Cambridge IGCSE and A-level English Literature, across all Key Stages. Furthermore, his previous posts have involved eight years at Exeter College (UK) where, in addition to his teaching responsibilities, James acted as Tutor to Years 12 and 13. James enjoys a keen interest in the Model United Nations (MUN) and journalistic activities, enhanced by his previous experience in creative writing enterprises.

Ms Kate Orpwood

English Teacher

Kate’s teaching philosophy is that of Goethe: ‘if we treat people as they could be, we will help them become what they ought to be’. This is how we nurture ‘individuals who are unafraid to forge their own paths’. This resonates with Epsom’s belief that ‘education is the greatest tool we have to change the world’. Kate believes that academic mastery matters, and it must start with us as teachers. Kate has a First Class BA (Hons) in English and American Literature and Master’s Distinction in Commonwealth and Postcolonial Literatures; her portfolio for her PGCE course graded all twenty of her observed lessons as 1s with ‘outstanding’ subject knowledge. Kate’s students have, unsurprisingly, enjoyed Oxbridge and Ivy League success and her passion and enthusiasm for learning shine through. In addition to her academic work, Kate has worked for many years as an Assistant Housemistress and ensures the highest standards of care for her girls.

Mrs Jenny Garnett

English and Drama Teacher

Jenny is a very experienced and successful educator who has worked in boarding schools before joining us at Epsom. Her philosophy resonates very closely with Epsom’s – she recognises all her students as individuals and values and celebrates this individuality in her lessons. Jenny considers her subjects of English and Dramatic Arts to be a wonderful combination because they allow her to be very creative with her teaching and to use Drama skills to teach the English language. She believes that this enables her students to have fun and learn at the same time. Jenny has an infectious enthusiasm for her subjects and her energy and positivity shine through!

Mr Rupert Whitty

Head of EAL

Mr Rupert Whitty joined Epsom in 2017 from Dubai, where he taught EAL at an international school for three years. Prior to that he spent two years working at a university language centre in the UK, and six years at an international school in Bangkok. He believes that the best EAL support can only be achieved by knowing a child’s interests and their previous cultural and educational background. Epsom’s EAL Department has enjoyed significant success under Rupert’s leadership with EAL students progressing to achieve offers from some of the most prestigious universities globally. As Assistant Housemaster of Propert Rupert works closely with the boys in his House to ensure their personal development and highest standards of care.

Mr Rui Jie Tee

EMIP & EAL Teacher

Rui Jie has over 3 years of experience teaching English and Dramatic Arts and worked previously as Head of Department – a role that included overseeing a range of inter house activities both sporting and cultural. Rui Jie is a lifelong learner and is completing a PhD.He relishes the challenge of meeting learners at their ability level and finding the most suitable learning style for them. He considers his English and Drama experience a wonderful combination that allows him to deliver highly creative learning activities. Fully fluent in English & Mandarin, Rui Jie is integral to our English Mandarin Immersion Programme.

Mrs Charmaine Schoeman

EAL Teacher

Mrs Schoeman is an experienced and specialised language teacher. She obtained her Bachelor’s degree majoring in Linguistics and subsequently completed a Higher Diploma in Education from the University of Natal in South Africa. She has taught in a range of institutions in South Africa and abroad for 32 years, from Secondary Education to Teacher Training Colleges and after completing the TEFL qualification in 2016, she has lectured and taught EAL students from beginner to intermediate as well as IELTS. Her passion lies with language and encouraging students to improve their English communicative skills.

HUMANITIES.

Mr James Dale

Head of Humanities 

Mr James Dale has extensive experience as Head of Humanities having worked previously in schools in the UK, Poland and Thailand. At Epsom, James is the Head of Humanities and as such he leads the teaching and learning across the History, Politics and Geography Departments. James has taught History and Politics to A-level for many years in addition to Geography to GCSE level. James enjoys a keen interest in current affairs and he enjoys sharing his knowledge and enthusiasm with his students both in and beyond the classroom.

Dr Simon Cooke

Assistant Headteacher, History and Politics Teacher

Prior to joining Epsom Dr Simon Cooke worked at KYUEM where he successfully led the History department and was Head of the Humanities Faculty. He has a proven track record as an outstanding teacher whose pupils have enjoyed consistent Oxbridge success. He contributes greatly to the holistic development of students through enrichment activities such as MUN and academic societies. At Epsom Simon continues to inspire students through his excellent teaching but is also a member of our leadership team where he contributes to the strategic direction of Epsom and its quality assurance procedures.

Mr Christopher Harvey

Geography Teacher

Christopher is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and has extensive experience as a teacher, Head of Department and Head of Faculty. Christopher loves his subject and imparts this enthusiasm to his students and colleagues. His students have enjoyed significant academic success at IGCSE and A-level. Christopher has organised many trips and excursions for students to be able to take their learning beyond the classroom and appreciate their learning in real world contexts such as running trips to the Eden Project with Biology or Berlin with History. Christopher believes in holistic education and the ‘life-changing experiences’ it offers. It is for this reason, the nurturing of something greater, that he loves teaching.

Mr Oliver Boyle

Geography Teacher

Mr Boyle joined Epsom College after spending an extensive period teaching in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. He enjoyed a great deal of success in leading teams in the UAE as both Head of Geography and Head of Year. He obtained his bachelor’s degree from Brunel University before completing his PGCE in Geography at the University of Surrey and his MA in Education at The University of Bath. Not only does Mr Boyle bring substantial teaching experience to ECiM, but he is also a qualified PADI scuba diving Instructor (PADI IDC Staff) enabling him to teach first aid courses to staff and students at the school. He has over 200 diving and first aid certifications to his name and has logged nearly 1,000 dives.

Mr Boyle has run over thirty international school trips in his career, including GCSE Geography trips to the UK and scuba diving trips to the Maldives. He strongly believes that geography must be learned through the soles of one’s feet and that students must see relevance in everything they are taught. He is also an avid sportsman, playing squash and badminton at school and can regularly be seen training for long-distance running events around the campus.

ECONOMICS AND BUSINESS STUDIES.

Mr Phil Pedro

Head of EBS

Mr Pedro oversees the academic progress of students at Epsom from Key Stage 4 to Key Stage 5. He monitors their progress and works closely with Mrs Wendy Jones, our Deputy Head, to ensure that any issues are addressed promptly and that these interventions are effective. Mr Pedro is also responsible for the EPQ and leads the work of the Business and Economics Departments. Mr Pedro has extensive experience as an educator having taught MFL and Business in Austria, Japan and in the UK where he obtained his PGCE. During his two Bachelor degrees in French and Spanish universities, Phil specialised in Literature and Linguistics, and Business Management and Accounting. His Master’s degrees in Literature, Languages and Business are from universities in France and Germany. Phil is a keen sportsman and an avid cyclist.

Mr Liam Moulton

Economics & Business Studies Teacher

Mr Liam Moulton is a member of our Economics Department and prior to joining Epsom was Director of Humanities & Computer Science in an international school in China. He is an experienced mentor of teaching colleagues, has previous involvement in marketing and recruitment events, and enjoys ‘Business Simulation’ competitions (in which he has twice acted as a judge). Liam works extensively with our Sixth form as a member of our team dedicated to delivering A-levels.

Mr Loo Chuan Kian

Head of Computer Science

Mr Loo Chuan Kian has extensive experience of delivering ICT & Computer Science to IGCSE and A-level. Mr Loo has previously worked at some of the top schools in Malaysia including KTJ and Garden International School and under his tutelage students have gone on to achieve Top in Malaysia or Top in the World from the exam awarding body. In addition he is qualified to teach Physics to A-level. Mr Loo’s educational philosophy is that every pupil should have the opportunity to develop their skills and intellectual abilities to their fullest potential within a safe and caring learning environment.

Mr David Setiabudi

David is an innovative and highly creative teacher whose commitment to delivering excellent lessons has been recognised by his students. David is qualified to teach Art and Computer Science and he has combined these passions to design computer games for which he has received awards. David is committed to delivering the highest standards of teaching and learning and to ensuring that our students are ‘future ready’, equipped with IT capabilities that are fundamental in an increasingly digital world. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Art and Design and two Masters Degrees in Design and Artificial Intelligence.

Mrs Denu Sankey

Science Teacher

Denu’s work permeates many areas of our school community. As a Chemistry specialist Denu is integral to the success of our science department. She has a particular interest in supporting students with additional needs and leads our Learning Support Centre where she enables students to overcome challenges relating to their learning by taking a very individualised approach. Every child will have a bespoke programme to suit their individual needs. As Head of Crawfurd House, Denu supports her girls both academically and pastorally ensuring the highest standards of care. Prior to joining Epsom, Denu taught in the UK (Coopers’ Company & Coborn School) and at Garden International School (KL) and is heavily involved in charity fundraising events such as the RNLI and Oxfam.

Ms Suhada joined Epsom from another International School where she taught Islamic Studies and Malay Language. She started her teaching career as an Arabic teacher at International Tahfiz & Science Academy. Ms Suhada has an honours degree in Arabic and Islamic Civilization from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM). Ms Suhada is utterly dedicated to the success of her students and offers individual support to them which is greatly appreciated.

Ms Anna Mcleod

Head of Modern Languages, French Teacher

Anna has a stellar academic record and is extremely well qualified to stretch and challenge the most ambitious linguists as well as to support those students who are experiencing challenges. Fully trilingual in English, French and Spanish, Anna describes herself as an enthusiastic and committed practitioner. She takes pride in crafting high quality learning experiences for the classroom and places high value on encouraging pupils to perceive languages as relevant and enjoyable outside the classroom. She believes strongly in empowering students to set and achieve their own personal goals and builds strong relationships with high expectations and mutual respect as the foundation. Outside of work, Anna enjoys the outdoors and loves to hike in beautiful countryside.

Mrs Peng Yuanzhen

Head of Mandarin, English Mandarin Immersion Programme Teacher

Mrs Peng is a native Mandarin speaker from Mainland China, who joined Epsom having taught previously in Rafflesia International School. Mrs Peng is extremely talented and well qualified and holds a Master’s degree in teaching Chinese as a foreign language from Sun Yat-sen University Guangzhou, China. She enjoys sharing Chinese culture, Zentangle, yoga and reading traditional Chinese medicine books. Mrs Peng leads our highly successful Mandarin Department as well as the Mandarin side of the English Mandarin Immersion Programme in the Prep School.

Mrs Chew Wei Teng

Mandarin Teacher

Mrs Chew Wei Teng joined Epsom from Sekolah Sri UCSI (Subang Jaya), where she was the Head of the Mandarin Department. An accomplished linguist, focusing on Mandarin, Cantonese, English and Bahasa Malaysia, she also enjoys a keen interest in language translation generally. Ms Wei Teng’s cheerful disposition is greatly appreciated by us all at Epsom and her friendly positive approach in lessons is most engaging for our students.

Mr Lim Yong Hui

Mandarin Teacher

Mr. Lim has been teaching for more than 10 years in various schools in Malaysia and China since graduating from UWE, UK. Prior to joining Epsom, he was serving as the pioneering teacher of the new Mandarin Department in his previous international school. He holds a Chinese teaching certification-CTCSOL from China’s MOE. He is also a gifted linguist and interpreter fluent in both Mandarin and English. Being passionate in making lessons engaging and interesting for students, he enjoys integrating music and technology into the classroom learning.

Mr Lee Boon Keat

Mandarin Teacher

Mr BoonKeat Lee joined Epsom from Sept 2021 and he taught Mandarin IGCSE and A Level. He started his teaching career as an Mandarin teacher in 2009 at Confucian Private and joined international curriculum after 6 years at HELP International School. Mr Lee has a Master degree in Chinese Literature at ZheJiang University China and Cambridge International Diploma in Teaching and Learning (CIDTL). Mr Lee believes that the aim of learning languages is communication. He enjoys interacting with students and does not view this position as a job. Rather, he sees it as an opportunity to learn more about the interaction and communication between different types of people.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION.

Mr Robert de Wet

Head of PE

Mr Robert de Wet joined Epsom from Raffles American School (Johor Bahru), where he was the Head of Senior Boys’ Boarding. Robert has previously taught at Treverton College in South Africa, where he was Housemaster and overall Sports Coordinator. Robert is qualified to teach English and Geography to Key Stage 3 Level, and of course Physical Education. He holds qualifications in a number of sports (for example World Rugby Level 2) and is experienced in coaching a range of activities, such as water polo, swimming, cricket and tennis. In addition to teaching and pastoral commitments, Robert has a keen interest in photography and hiking.

Mr Dien Wooler

PE Teacher

Dien works in the PE Department and teaches PE and Swimming across the whole school. He joined Epsom in 2021 after spending 6 years in South Korea as a Head of Department. Dien previously taught in state schools in the UK and prior to this, had a long career as an officer in the British military. His education includes an MA from the University of Exeter.

Dien is passionate about the benefits of PE and Sports and feels strongly that there is an activity out there for everyone to shine. He loves all sports but in particular he enjoys Athletics. He competed at a high level for 15 years as a jumper and loves to impart his knowledge and experiences onto his students. Dien is a qualified swim and gymnastics coach and takes great delight in seeing students make progress no matter how small.

Dien has a wealth of experience in training, and leading sports teams in overseas sporting competitions such as the FOBISIA Games and World School Games and is looking forward to taking Epsom teams to similar events in Malaysia and further afield.

Mr Ian Schoeman

Head of Performing Arts

Mr Schoeman takes a very innovative and forward thinking approach to learning. For example, our performing Arts Department has continued to thrive despite online learning thanks to initiatives such as the Epsom Eisteddfod and Epsom Edge online. Ian is extremely professional and leads his faculty by example. As Head of Propert House he sets the highest standards both academically and pastorally. Ian joined Epsom from Taylor’s International School in Puchong, where he was Head of Performing Arts. Ian has overseen a number of recent school productions, including Footloose, Hairspray and Peter Pan. Ian was previously a Head of Department in South Africa and, as a teacher, also experienced an exchange year at the prestigious King’s College in Taunton (UK).

Ms Denise Tan

Ms Denise Tan is integral to the success and profile of our Music department and has been instrumental in organising our school ensembles and assisting pupils’ preparation for examinations. She has a proven track record in teaching pupils the basic principles of ‘music making’ throughout the college from the prep school up. Denise has also proved very successful in encouraging musical participation during our annual Summer Camp at Epsom. Denise immerses herself in the life of our school and participates in many initiatives such as the staff choir and various staff sports activities.

Prior to joining us at Epsom,Catherine worked at Limkokwing University of Creative Technology where she was programme leader in Sound & Music Design. Catherine also has useful experience as a piano teacher at the KL Conservatory and The Music Professional Academy which she draws upon while supporting our students. In addition to her music responsibilities, she has a concerted interest in Event Management, with involvement in orchestrating events at the Georgetown Festival and the Piano Extravaganza at the School of Music in Universiti Sains Malaysia.

Mr Ruthradevan (Devan) Tamilselvan

Head of Art and Design

Devan started teaching as a volunteer in 2009 in Malaysia before successfully completing his Bachelor’s degree. He developed a passion for product design and manufacturing and went on to pursue multimedia certification for graphic design and computer aided drawings as a postgraduate. For 11 years, he has taught across the whole age range including adults in creative arts and various media both formally and informally. Devan enjoys designing and undertaking DIY projects, event management, volunteer services, coordinating events and is an editorial enthusiast who has a keen interest in creating bold and striking photography. He has been involved in the design of various multimedia works from flyers to yearbooks. His work is known for its creativity and uniqueness. Through teaching Devan hopes to cultivate a culture of excellence within students and to enable them to explore the creative and sustainable development of products and services.

Ms Aishah Wilson

Aishah is a valued member of our Science team, eager to share her enthusiasm for Biology with the students. Having graduated from the University of Oxford with a first class in her dissertation and achieved exceptional results in the IB Diploma, Aishah also provides support, guidance and super-curricular and enrichment activities to those targeting elite universities as Resident Elite University Tutor. Having volunteered with charities providing educational and engagement services to children with special needs, she proceeded to pursue a career in education, first starting out as an assistant at Marlborough College Malaysia where she supported students with learning difficulties in Biology and other sciences alongside taking on duties in pastoral care. Having joined the Epsom team, she is determined to ensure her classes are fun, inclusive and of top educational quality to bring out the best in her students.

Nor Atiqah Abd Rahman is our much loved librarian! Her delightful smile and friendly nature welcome us all to our beautiful library – the heart of our school! Prior to joining us at Epsom Atiqah worked for 3 years as a librarian in Kolej Unikop, Selangor and before that as a Library Executive in Mahsa University, Kuala Lumpur.

School Counsellor.

Mrs Pajan Kaur

Pajan is our friendly and supportive school counsellor. She works closely with our student body to guide them towards managing their mental wellbeing while nurturing them holistically as they build their personality and identity.

Pajan completed her Masters in Applied Psychology at Middlesex University in the UK and obtained a Master’s degree in Counselling from OUM in Malaysia. She is passionate about counselling and psychology and completed her Bachelor of Psychology in HELP University, Malaysia. As a student she volunteered to support various causes and programs and benefited from the opportunity to interact with people from all walks of life.

Pajan has extensive experience as a counsellor including in a boarding school. At Epsom she works with staff to foster a supportive ethos where students feel safe to discuss their mental wellbeing and to address any anxieties that they may be experiencing.
