Inspiring Creativity: Art & Design Highlights for Term 3

As Term 3 progresses, it’s a wonderful time to reflect on the creative milestones our students have reached in the world of art and design. Year 7, 8, and 9 students have explored new techniques, developed their skills, and embraced personal expression in their projects. Let’s look back at the highlights from Term 2, where each year group ventured into exciting artistic territory.
Year 7: Tessellation and Clay Tile Designs
In Term 2, Year 7 students explored the concept of tessellation, creating intricate, repeating patterns inspired by the work of M.C. Escher. Students worked with geometric shapes to understand symmetry and balance, producing dynamic and visually engaging designs. Another key project involved clay tile designs, where students experimented with moulding and glazing clay, creating individual tiles that showcased texture, colour, and creativity. These projects fostered both technical skills and an appreciation for personal artistic expression.

Year 8: Portraits and the Shoe Project
Year 8 students in Term 2 delved into portraiture, learning to capture the human face through detailed sketching, shading, and the study of proportions. They explored various materials to express not just likeness, but personality and emotion. Additionally, the Shoe Project encouraged students to think creatively about footwear, transforming shoes into works of art. This project challenged students to combine fashion design with artistic expression, pushing their innovation and design skills.

Year 9: Figures in Motion
For Year 9 students, Term 2 focused on figures in motion. Students worked to capture the energy and fluidity of the human body in action through gesture drawings and action poses. This project emphasised observation and anatomy, while also encouraging students to experiment with mixed media. Students were encouraged to infuse their personal style into their work, making their motion studies unique and expressive.

Looking Ahead to Term 3
As we look ahead to Term 3, exciting new projects await:
- Year 7 will dive into Pop Art, exploring bold colours, iconic imagery, and popular culture in their work.
- Year 8 will embark on a bird project, studying these fascinating creatures and capturing their beauty through various art forms.
- Year 9 will focus on natural forms, preparing for the IGCSE with studies of organic shapes, textures, and patterns found in nature.
- Year 10 will continue working on their IGCSE portfolios, refining their coursework and building a solid foundation for their final assessments.
Well Done to Year 11 and 13
A special congratulations goes to the Year 11 and Year 13 art students who have recently completed their final art exams. Their hard work and dedication have been truly inspiring, and the final results of their efforts are eagerly awaited.
Art Exhibition
It is also exciting to announce that there will be a showcase of student artwork at the end of the term. Be sure to look out for this exhibition, where the best student work will be on display, celebrating creativity and progress.
