Sean’s Transformative Journey: Emceeing UNICEF’s World Children’s Day Celebration and Advocating for Child Rights

Author: Sean Z.

On November 20th, I had the incredible honour of emceeing UNICEF’s World Children’s Day celebration, which also marked the 70th anniversary of their collaboration with the people and government of Malaysia. I co-hosted this memorable event alongside my 15-year-old friend, Kowachee, an inspiring influencer and musician. Together, under the guidance of Ms. Lina Tan from Red Communications, we crafted and practiced our lines to make the day as meaningful as possible.

The event was graced by distinguished guests, including Datuk Nancy Syukri, Malaysia’s Minister of Women, Family, and Community Development; Mr. Robert Gass, UNICEF’s representative to Malaysia; Ms. Karima El Korri, the UN Resident Coordinator; and Mr. Niko Wieland, UNICEF’s Communications Director. The audience also included child rights advocates who shared the same dedication to creating a better world for children as I do. In addition to the amazing UNICEF team and child rights advocates, the event featured musical performances by Zimi J, a Malaysian band composed of members diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, as well as young performers from MusicMart.

Following the event, I had the opportunity to be interviewed by the media and was later whisked off to the BERNAMA TV studio to appear live on The Nation. There, I joined two other incredible child rights advocates, 17-year-old Alyssa and 15-year-old Jessie. It was a privilege to share the platform with them as we discussed our shared vision for children’s rights in Malaysia.

This experience has been transformative for me—not just as an emcee but as a passionate child rights advocate. I was proud to later participate as a panellist in a public forum titled What Malaysian Children Want, organized by Childline Foundation and Puak Payong. This event coincided with the handover of Malaysia’s Children’s Report on the UNCRC CSO alternative report, an impressive initiative entirely led by Malaysian children.

I look forward to continuing this journey of listening, learning, and contributing to the protection of children’s rights in Malaysia and beyond. It’s a privilege to be part of this movement, and I am eager to make a difference.
