There is always something special about the start of a new academic year, and it has been so lovely to welcome the girls back to Wilson House. For some, it has meant returning to familiar faces and routines, while for others, everything is completely new – a new country, a new school and a new House. These first few weeks are so important for settling in, building connections and creating that sense of belonging that we want every girl in Wilson to feel.
One of the best things about House life is seeing friendships develop across different year groups, nationalities and backgrounds. With around 85 girls in Wilson, there are so many opportunities to meet people you might not otherwise cross paths with.
Over the next few weeks, we will be encouraging the girls to get involved, spend time together and look beyond their usual friendship groups. From participating in Interhouse Cross Country, Quiz and Football, to supporting new students. Often, it is the smallest things that make the biggest difference: saying hello to someone new, sitting with a different person at dinner, helping someone who looks a little lost or simply inviting someone to join in.
For our returning students in particular, there is a real responsibility to help our new girls feel welcome. Starting at a new school – and for some, living away from home for the first time – can be daunting, and having a friendly face around the House can make all the difference. Our buddy system gives all new students a few familiar faces to support their transition into our boarding house.
We have an excellent group of student leaders in Wilson. From our House Prefects – Cheryl A. (Head of House) and Selena O. (Deputy Head of House) to our many School Prefects – Reina A., Aisulu K., Una C. and Angela L. (International), Stephanie K. and Tracy W. (Wellbeing), Esther L. (Academic) and Coco W. (Admissions). Our student leaders are an important part of House life and help to set the tone for the community we want to create. Leadership does not have to mean being the loudest or most confident person in the room. It can be checking in on someone, setting a positive example, speaking up when something is not right, or simply being someone that others know they can turn to. In the few days we have spent in Wilson, I have already seen kindness countless times. These roles are also a fantastic opportunity for our girls to grow in confidence, take on responsibility and recognise what they can contribute to the House.
Ultimately, I want Wilson to be somewhere our girls feel comfortable being themselves, where friendships can grow and where they feel supported to try new things. We truly have the most incredible pastoral team, with Ms Indah and Ms Sooi helping me to keep Wilson running, with our fantastic Matrons Ms Aini and Ms Linda. We also have a very strong Tutor team – Ms Fong, Ms Peng, Ms Tan, Ms Khan, Ms Marsden, Mrs Lindsell, Ms Anguilla, Ms Lee, Ms Maalouf and Ms Hema. I am really looking forward to seeing those relationships and confidence develop over the year ahead.
