How Admissions Prefects Lead by Example

Effective leadership within the Admissions Prefect team is grounded in leading by example, extending beyond mere competence to fostering trust and mutual respect within Epsom College Malaysia’s diverse community. This reflection highlights the importance of nurturing future leaders by providing guidance, meaningful opportunities, and ensuring continuity in leadership practices across generations.

We, the Admissions Prefects, believe that leading by example extends beyond simply demonstrating capability or outlining how tasks should be completed. More importantly, it plays a vital role in fostering trust and mutual respect within the team. Before being appointed as Admissions Prefects, we showed initiative through our involvement in school activities. We played a key role in parent tours and took the lead in multiple induction days. Our efforts were recognised with the Extra Mile Award, which has not been awarded again since Term 2 last year. We believe this kind of commitment sets a strong example and builds trust within the prefect team. As a result, many prefects are more willing to step up for events such as Induction Day and Open Day, often adjusting their own schedules to contribute.

We also view leading by example as an opportunity to nurture and develop future generations of prefects. Rather than solely demonstrating expectations, we actively involve newer Admissions Prefects by providing them with opportunities to take the lead during events, while offering guidance and support throughout the process. Through the shadowing programme, we provide constructive feedback, identify areas for improvement, and share strategies for managing events that require a high degree of adaptability and commitment. This approach not only builds confidence but also prepares them to take on greater responsibility.

This approach to leadership reflects the guidance we received from our previous prefect, Shannie T., and is something we are committed to continuing for those who come after us.

Ultimately, we believe that leadership is not defined by position, but by the example and guidance we provide to help others develop along the way. By continuing this approach, we hope to set the new batch of prefects up for success and build a culture within the Admissions Prefect team that is not only effective but sustainable for the future.
