Guiding the Journey Beyond Epsom

Choosing what comes next after Epsom can be both exciting and challenging. So far this term, our Sixth Form students have had opportunities to explore their options, engage directly with universities and gain a deeper understanding of the application process. We also hosted a parent workshop with AUG, exploring university pathways, destinations, costs and opportunities, while helping parents consider: “Which education pathway and destination best matches my child’s academic profile, interests, budget and long-term goals?”

Our first Sixth Form event welcomed representatives from leading UK universities, including Cambridge, Imperial College London and St Andrews. Students learned about each institution, including courses, opportunities and admissions processes. The sessions also provided guidance on the UK university application system, including the different stages of UCAS and how to approach and structure a strong personal statement.

A key takeaway was the importance of demonstrating why a particular course is right for them and providing evidence of their interest and engagement. This could include activities, internships, wider reading and other super-curricular experiences. Students were encouraged to focus on quality rather than quantity, reflecting on what they have learned and how these experiences have shaped their academic interests.

In recent weeks, we also hosted our annual University Mega Fair in the GC, bringing together universities from the UK, Australia, Switzerland, Ireland and Singapore. This provided students across KS4 and KS5 with exposure to diverse institutions, university environments, courses and international pathways.

Across these events, students spoke directly with university representatives and asked bespoke questions tailored to their individual profiles, subject choices, interests and future plans. Questions covered entry requirements, IELTS requirements based on their current English proficiency, course content and duration, location and costs, direct-entry and transfer pathways, industry experience, internships, graduate opportunities, student support and professional recognition. Students could also ask about application timelines, scholarships, differences between universities and opportunities for further study, including Master’s degrees. These conversations provided first-hand insights relevant to each student, helping them compare options and identify courses and universities that could best support their academic, personal and career goals.

Our university counselling team continues to provide tailored guidance for UK and international applications throughout Sixth Form. We operate an open-door policy alongside an appointment system, while parents are also welcome to contact us directly with questions or to arrange a meeting. Please refer to the letter sent earlier this month by Ms Macleod which outlined the guidance and support we offer at Epsom.

Together, these opportunities help students move from thinking about university to actively exploring their future options. By meeting university representatives, asking questions and comparing pathways, students are developing the knowledge and confidence to make informed decisions. With continued research, reflection and personalised guidance, we aim to ensure every student feels supported and prepared for their next step beyond Epsom.
