Life in Carr is made up of hundreds of small moments. Some are exciting and memorable, while others are completely ordinary. Together, though, they are what make the House feel like home. Whether it is preparing for House Music, celebrating success outside school, going for an evening walk around campus or simply sitting together at the end of a busy day, these moments shape the boys’ experience of Carr.
This year, we have already seen plenty of examples of what Carr is about. The boys have thrown themselves into House events, particularly House Music, where rehearsals have brought different year groups together and created a real sense of shared purpose. We have also been proud to celebrate individual achievements, from success in fencing competitions to boys giving up their own time to collect clothes, books and household items for families in need.
Some of my favourite moments, however, are often the quieter ones. It might be seeing an older boy help a younger student settle in, watching the boys support each other after a difficult day, or simply hearing the laughter coming from the common room in the evening. Even our Saturday evening walk around campus, when the clouds prevented us from seeing the moon we had gone looking for, became one of those simple moments that brought everyone together.
Of course, House life also brings challenges. Boys make mistakes, fall out with friends, forget things and occasionally need reminding about expectations. These moments matter too. They are opportunities to learn about responsibility, resilience and how our actions affect other people.
Ultimately, the moments that shape life in Carr are about belonging. We want the boys to look back and remember the friendships, the laughter, the challenges and the people who supported them. More than anything, we hope their time in Carr helps them grow into kind, confident and independent young men who understand the importance of looking after one another.
