During the week of 21st September, in conjunction with Alzheimer’s Month, Scope Medical Outreach Programs led by Sweetie and Helen, had the opportunity to raise funds for three organisations supporting individuals affected by Alzheimer’s and dementia across the world: the Alzheimer’s Society UK, Alzheimer’s Disease Foundation Malaysia and Shwe Than Lwin Elderly Home in Myanmar.
Throughout the week, by selling chocolate chip cookies, banana chocolate cookies, and handmade bracelets, students took part in the initiative, supporting the fight against Alzheimer’s and contributing towards greater awareness, support, research and care for those living with dementia and their families.
During the Wellness Wednesday activity, students crafted purple ribbons with safety pins in their tutor groups. The ribbons served as a motif of solidarity with individuals and families affected by Alzheimer’s, turning a simple craft into a visible reminder of the importance of Alzheimer’s awareness. It was especially endearing and encouraging to see the Epsom community come together in support of the cause, with students and staff proudly wearing the purple ribbons throughout the week.
Finally, to end the week off, we created the Memory Wall, where students and staff shared photographs and memories wearing their purple ribbons in their respective tutor groups. These activities highlighted how memories shape our identities and relationships, encouraging the Epsom community to reflect on the importance of protecting and cherishing them.
Through these activities, Scope Medical Outreach Programs hoped to show that Alzheimer’s awareness extends beyond understanding the disease but also about supporting the communities affected by it.
