A common question among the student body is “What do the Wellbeing Prefects actually do?” The obvious answer would be: looking after the wellbeing of our peers, and assisting the pastoral areas of Epsom. However, our duties extend beyond this. Our primary goal is to cultivate an overall atmosphere of care and belonging.
Our primary responsibility is running the student council, consisting of weekly meetings in which we, alongside our student leadership team, oversee practical issues within the school system and propose solutions, such as problems with facilities and concerns among students. As of recently, we have introduced a new system in the student council, involving monthly feedback–sharing sessions – in which, the students present suggestions to amend certain departments. Overall, the student council’s main aim is to ensure student voices are heard, and to bridge the gap between the students and staff.
One of our most notable school–wide initiatives was the senior letterbox, used as a farewell gift to our seniors from the previous year. By creating a mailbox system on the notice board outside the library, we were able to foster a relationship between year groups. Students of all year groups were given the opportunity to write anonymous letters to their seniors, thanking them for their contributions to the school and showing their appreciation.
Our current project is the ‘Letter to future self’ tutor activity. In tutor time, we gave students the opportunity to write letters to their future selves, reflecting on their positive experiences of 2026 – helping them feel proud and accomplished with themselves, and thinking more optimistically about the future.
Alongside this, we have been focused on International Mental Illness Awareness Week, working closely with Mrs Garnett to spread awareness about the destigmatisation of mental health in assemblies. We’ve also helped to plan activities regarding leisure activities to help students relax from the immense pressure of academic life. This included optional restful periods, in which students are provided with mental relief, free drinks, and beanbags that will help them recharge.
Finally, our most exciting project is approaching in November! This event is known as ‘Colour run’, in which students participate in a school-wide run around the school – and are sprayed with colourful pigments by the prefects. This activity is usually supported by T-shirt sales and sock sales, in which students can get fresh clothes to stain with colour. This is a bond-building and fun activity that we hope you participate in within the near future. Hope to see you there!
