Our Role as Heads of College

Some heroes don’t wear capes but instead an orange and blue striped tie… Jokes! Hello everyone and welcome back. We hope the break gave you a proper rest and that you’ve come back buzzing with energy for the term ahead. To everyone joining Epsom for the first time, a very warm welcome from both of us. Induction day was a pleasure! If we haven’t met you yet, please do find us and say hello.

A good deal of being Heads of College is managing our many prefect departments. We lead, we make the difficult calls and we hold our teammates accountable for what they’ve promised. Our prefect team is full of strong and motivated students with diverse views and lots of creativity! As you know, our prefect team consists of several departments that each carry out their own events and as the Heads of College, we are involved in all of it – that’s the fun part! As they say, a jack of all trades. Here’s a sneak peek into what has been brewing behind the scenes… Our social prefects are already deep in planning and will soon kick off the year with the Sixth Form Icebreaking Social. Our academic prefects are busy putting together some useful study resources whilst offering moral support to their fellow Year 13s sitting with the pressure of university applications. The international prefects are working out how we might celebrate our growing list of nationalities and our Admissions prefects are hustling away planning our next Open Day. You’ve probably all met your respective House Prefects and can see for yourselves that they help keep the house running with their infectious enthusiasm. We think we have a killer prefect team, and we can’t wait to see what they each build this year.

Much of our own role is being the channel between our students and the school’s senior leadership team. We speak with them monthly, including the teams behind boarding, pastoral care and day-to-day operations. Some of those conversations are easy. Others mean posing a tougher question to the SLT on your behalf and advocating for you. We are happy to have these difficult conversations and that’s why you can always come and speak to us when something isn’t right.

One of those conversations has already led somewhere. Mr Gough, our new Head of Boarding, will be hosting a committee for positive change, which we’re starting this term. It gives our boarders from every year group a way to speak for themselves and be involved in discussions to drive positive changes. Alongside those joint staff and student efforts are the student-led ones; chief among them is TEDx Epsom College Malaysia which we are excited to host in the upcoming months. There is still lots of preparation to be done but we hope you’ll look forward to this opportunity to have a stage beyond the classroom.

You’ll see us at Epsom Live Talk Series, listening to visiting professionals with our serious faces and asking inquisitive questions. You’ll also see us sprinting to Mercato to buy drinks for a fundraiser – both part of the job!

So come and annoy us. Annoy your house prefects. Tell us what’s working and what isn’t. We also hope to publish newsletters throughout the academic year so that you can follow along on our Prefect journey together! Keep an eye out for that. We’re genuinely so excited for what’s to come. Watch this space.
