Our Year 7 to Year 12 students recently attended an exclusive masterclass led by Dr Kamran Yunus, Director of Admissions at Downing College, University of Cambridge. The session provided valuable insights into the Cambridge application process, offering clarity on the collegiate system and practical guidance on how students can strengthen their applications.
The masterclass began by addressing a common misconception about Cambridge’s collegiate system. While each college offers a distinct environment and student experience, all students benefit from the same academic teaching, curriculum and faculty across the University. This reassured families that college choice is more about personal fit than academic advantage.
A key focus of the session was the personal statement, a critical component of the application process. Students were encouraged to prioritise depth over breadth in their academic exploration. Rather than listing numerous activities, the emphasis was placed on engaging deeply with a select few supercurricular experiences closely aligned with their chosen course. For example, reading widely is only impactful when students can articulate the insights they have gained, make connections between ideas and reflect critically on their learning.
Dr Kamran Yunus also highlighted the importance of authenticity. Students were advised to pursue supercurricular activities they genuinely enjoy, as this naturally leads to more thoughtful engagement and stronger personal reflections. This approach not only strengthens applications but also fosters deeper intellectual curiosity, which is central to success at Cambridge and beyond.
Overall, the session offered both clarity and reassurance, equipping students with a more focused and strategic approach to their applications. By emphasising meaningful engagement, critical reflection and authenticity, the masterclass reinforced the qualities that top universities value most. Such opportunities reflect our commitment to supporting students in achieving their academic aspirations with confidence and purpose.
