This half term, our Key Stage 3 Science students have been getting hands-on in the laboratory by carrying out microscale experiments to investigate the pH of different substances.
Rather than using large test tubes and beakers, students worked with very small quantities of chemicals on a microscale mat and micro-equipment. This modern laboratory technique helps students work safely, accurately, and responsibly, while still developing essential practical skills.
Using Universal Indicator, students tested a variety of everyday and laboratory substances and carefully observed the colour changes produced. By comparing these colours to the pH scale, they were able to decide whether substances were acidic, neutral, or alkaline, and even estimate how strong an acid or alkali might be.
Microscale chemistry also links to real-world science, as it reflects how scientists reduce waste and environmental impact in professional laboratories.
It has been fantastic to see our students working so thoughtfully and enthusiastically, demonstrating curiosity, teamwork, and excellent laboratory behaviour. Key Stage 3 Science continues to build strong foundations for future learning, and our budding scientists are off to a great start!
