KLIMC (Kuala Lumpur Intermediate Maths Challenge) Team Event

On Saturday 8th November, twelve intrepid Year 9 and 10 students from Epsom College Malaysia made their way to the KLIMC Team Maths Competition at The International School at ParkCity. We woke up early to depart and, on arrival, started the warm-up activity: Sudoku-style ‘Inky’ puzzles. It was challenging but fun; we had to work together and think creatively to solve them.

The first official round was the individual test. We had one hour to finish it, with no talking or calculators allowed. The test was harder than I expected, but the questions were interesting, such as ‘How many weighings do you need to find the lighter coin among 2025?’ Even though it was tough, it was worth the effort, with Sosuke A. ultimately being crowned the Year 9 winner of this round.

The other three rounds were group activities: Limitless Logic, Game Show, and Dragon Maths. For Limitless Logic, we solved worksheets together to unlock rooms and complete more open-ended questions inside (such as ‘What is the largest prime number you can write down?’). We split into small groups and worked well as a team.

The Game Show round was more hands-on: we used tangrams to make specific shapes, answered general knowledge questions (such as ‘How tall are the Petronas Towers?’), and found number patterns. We really used our brains for this!

Dragon Maths had us running to get question sheets, then discussing ideas quickly to solve them – it tested how well we could communicate.

We didn’t win any team medals, but we gained so much more. We learned to sharpen our maths skills and to appreciate how important teamwork is. This competition wasn’t just about maths; it taught us that trying hard and working together matter more than winning. We’ll take this experience with us and keep growing both in maths and in working with others.
