House System in the Prep School

The House system is central to our pastoral care across Epsom College. Within their House, a pupil feels a secure sense of belonging, will have opportunities to work with older/younger children, compete and contribute to their House and its projects.

In addition to having a different Class Teacher each year, children join one of six Houses once they reach Year 1. Siblings are typically in the same House and all Y1-6 staff are in a House too. Our team of Heads of Houses develop an ongoing relationship with pupils in their House, which will last until the child leaves the Epsom. This system provides a second level of pastoral care, which is there for the long-term.

Children develop strong loyalty to their Houses and this encourages team spirit and mutual interdependence. There are various inter-House competitions and everyone takes them extremely seriously!

Upper Key Stage 2 children apply for the position of House Captain during September. They are interviewed and appointed by Head of School and Heads of Houses. With the support of the Prep School Well-being Coordinator, the HCs organise and motivate the members of their house for events throughout the year. House Competitions

During the year, there are various competitions in which Houses compete against each other. Competition is fierce but great fun. All Prep pupils take part and are encouraged to do their best. These include:

  • House Sports competitions in year groups where all children compete
  • House Music Competitions in which all pupils either sing or play
  • House Sports Days in which all pupils run, throw and compete
  • House Swimming Galas where pupils all swim for their House
  • The House Cups are awarded in the summer term.
