Matthew has extensive experience of academic and pastoral leadership having been Head of Department and Head of a large and very successful Sixth Form before eventually becoming Headteacher. Prior to leaving Wales to move to Malaysia, Matthew was Head of Learning Services for the entire region. He led the establishment of the first all through school (ages 3-18) and managed over 40 Primary and Secondary schools. Matthew missed interacting with students thus he opted to return to a school based position. As Headmaster of Epsom College in Malaysia, Matthew is committed to ensuring consistently excellent standards both in terms of academic outcomes, pastoral care and wider curriculum provision.

Kate Carden-Brown

university. Prior to moving to Malaysia to join Epsom, Kate led a large and successful Sixth Form with over 350 students that grew to be the leading state school for Oxbridge success in Wales. She is a strong advocate of building students’ confidence and ability to engage with challenges beyond the classroom and has worked hard to establish a vibrant super curricular programme. Under her leadership her previous school debate team were crowned Welsh Schools Debating Champions and made it to the British finals. At Epsom she has continued this work for example by encouraging and supporting students in setting up and leading debate teams and academic societies that enable them to broaden their knowledge while developing their interpersonal skills.

Jane Rouson

Head of Prep School

Jane is from Sussex in the South of England. After earning a BA in Music…

and Primary Education from King Alfred’s, Winchester (now Winchester University) she started working in a Junior School in her hometown, indeed, the largest Junior School in West Sussex. During her 15 years teaching at this large school, indeed the largest in West Sussex, she taught all of Key Stage 2 but mainly Year 6. As well as teaching, Jane held the positions of Assessment Leader and Head of ‘Learning to Learn’. Further promotions led to her appointment as Deputy Headteacher with responsibility for Teaching and Learning, Assessment, staff Development and Academic Monitoring. She also held many pastoral responsibilities within the school and was a staff governor for 13 years. Jane was also seconded to the local authority to advise on curriculum development, teaching and learning and mathematics in other schools. More recently she has been a teacher and leader at a prestigious international school in Korea where she also holds whole school leadership responsibilities.

Avis Parker

Although Avis Parker has lived in Malaysia for over 9 years…

she holds a degree from the University of Swansea, PGCE from the University of Bristol and an MA from the University of Nottingham. She is currently studying for a PhD. She has a wealth of experience successfully teaching History to learners in KS3, KS4 and KS5 and Geography at KS3 in the UK and in Malaysia. On top of this, she has also worked in School Improvement for a large Local Authority in the UK.

Since living in Malaysia, she has become increasingly interested in the impact of effective pastoral care on academic achievement which motivated her to hold a number of leadership roles including the Director of Key Stage 4. Keen to develop her skills further, she studied for a Diploma in ‘Pastoral Care, Guidance and Pupil Support’ part-time at the University of Aberdeen between 2018 and 2020. As an advocate of Carol Dweck’s growth mindset, Parker is a firm believer that intelligence, skills and abilities can be nurtured over time given the right environment. A key component of her teaching philosophy is to promote confidence and develop resilience in learners to effectively navigate the challenges in life to become successful global citizens.

Phil Pedro

Pedro oversees the academic progress of students at Epsom from Key…

Stage 4 to Key Stage 5. He monitors their progress and works to ensure that any issues are addressed promptly and that these interventions are effective. Mr Pedro is also responsible for the EPQ and leads the work of the Business and Economics Departments. Mr Pedro has extensive experience as an educator having taught MFL and Business in Austria, Japan and in the UK where he obtained his PGCE. During his two Bachelor degrees in French and Spanish universities, Phil specialised in Literature and Linguistics, and Business Management and Accounting. His Master’s degrees in Literature, Languages and Business are from universities in France and Germany. Phil is a keen sportsman and an avid cyclist.

Katherine Fowler

She has been a House Parent at Cranbrook School in the UK and in North London Collegiate School in South Korea and has also been a Head of Year. She believes schools should provide a safe environment for students to fulfill their potential, provide a wide range of opportunities and promote the development of key skills for future success. Kate is a strong advocate for developing wellbeing and leadership opportunities for students. Kate has over 20 years of experience teaching Geography and has also led highly successful Geography Departments both in the UK and internationally. She is passionate about her subject and passes this enthusiasm on to her students. Kate is also a keen sports enthusiast who enjoys running and cycling and has previously coached athletics and hockey.

Andrew Thompson Gilbert

Andrew is an enthusiastic teacher who conveys his love of History and Politics in each lesson…

He is passionate about developing oracy and debating skills, helping students to express themselves orally and in their written work. An experienced head of department who worked for ten years at Watford Grammar School for Girls, Andrew is responsible for academic progress and support at KS4. He also has experience in supporting successful applications of talented students to high achieving universities, including Oxford and Cambridge. Andrew has organised and participated in an extensive range of extra-curricular activities, including trips to Washington D.C, the WW1 battlefields of Belgium and debating competitions in the UK House of Commons. He is a graduate of the University of East Anglia and completed his PGCE at Canterbury Christ Church university. Andrew is a keen follower of current affairs and an avid sportsman, playing football, badminton, golf, cricket and regularly running. He impresses on students the importance of developing their passions and interests outside of academic subjects. Outside of school, Andrew enjoys spending time with his young family and travelling to historical locations. He revels in experiencing different cultures and sampling as many culinary delights as possible.

Michael Stearman

Michael holds a sports degree from Leeds Carnegie and began his career teaching Physical Education in the north of England in a multicultural school, specialising in football, cricket…

and rugby before moving to teach in Madrid, Spain, where he spent ten years as Head of Physical Education with various leadership responsibilities. Michael believes a well rounded education is extremely important in a young person’s development. He is keen to create opportunities both inside and outside the classroom and considers every aspect of a student’s experience at school to be vital. Michael’s experience in leadership led him to support students in both an academic and pastoral setting and he is keen to support Epsom’s Key Stage three students in their leadership journey.
As a passionate geographer, Michael adeptly imparts knowledge spanning the physical, environmental, and human aspects of the subject. His pedagogical approach ensures that students glean a comprehensive understanding of the world around them.
Michael’s personal interests span various landscapes as well. An avid runner, football enthusiast and keen hiker, he is keen to explore the beautiful country of Malaysia. His loyalty transcends borders, supporting both Liverpool FC and Atlético de Madrid.

Richard Lord

Richard holds a Masters degree in Leadership and Management in Education for Learning, and the National Professional Qualification for Headteachers (NPQH). He is a Specialist Leader of Education through the UK National College for Teaching and Leadership and has provided high quality support to teachers and senior leaders across a range of UK schools.

Richard has high expectations of all students and is committed to the highest educational standards. He believes not only in exceptional academic achievement, but also the values necessary for students to develop into responsible young adults that can make a positive contribution to society.

Richard’s enthusiasm for a high quality co-curricular programme in schools is inspired directly by his own broad ranging personal interests. He is a strong advocate of the importance of learning languages and is studying Brazilian Portuguese and Bahasa Melayu. He is also a competent martial artist, having studied several South East Asian martial arts and western combat sports including Pencak Silat, Muay Thai and several forms of Chinese Kung Fu. Richard is also a keen musician; he plays bass guitar and has played in several bands in and around the London area.
